Reliance Jio to launch a budget friendly laptop priced at 184 dollars (Rs. 15,000) with an embedded 4G sim card. Its aim is to recreate the success of its low-cost JioPhone in India’s highly price-sensitive market, reported Reuters.

The telecom giant has partnered with global market players Qualcomm and Microsoft for the JioBook. Based on technology from Arm Ltd Microsoft would help in powering its computing chips and Windows OS maker would enable support for some apps.

Jio is India’s biggest telecom carrier which covers over 420 million customers. As with the JioPhone, a 5G-enabled version for laptops will follow.

The laptop to enterprise customers such as schools and government institutes would be made available from this month and a consumer launch is expected in next three months.

Jio aims to sell units in large numbers by March and the production would be done locally by contract manufacturer Flex.

According to a research, PC shipments in India stood at 14.8 million units last year in total. Such shipment was led market players such HP, Dell and Lenovo.

With the launch of the JioBook the total addressable laptop market segment will expand by around 15 per cent, according to analysts.
