Rishi Sunak to become the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister (PM) and lead the Conservative Party after other candidates in the race opted out, on 24 October.

He will be taking oath as British PM on 28 October and most probably the cabinet will be formed on 29 October.

The centrist politician Penny Mordaunt, who failed to get enough backing from lawmakers to enter the ballot, was defeated by Rishi. At, the same time, the former prime minister Boris Johnson, being another rival, withdrew from the contest, saying he could no longer unite the party.

King Charles will ask Sunak to form a government, replacing Liz Truss, who beat him in a Tory election a month and a half ago.

In his first televised address as Tory leader, Sunak paid tribute to outgoing PM Liz Truss and warned that the UK faced a “profound” economic crisis.

He added that he would work with “integrity and humility” and work day in and day out to deliver for the British people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated British Prime Minister-elect Rishi Sunak and said he looked forward to working closely together on global issues and implementing the Road-map 2030 for bilateral relations.

He becomes Britain’s third prime minister in less than two months and will be tasked with restoring stability to a country reeling from years of political and economic turmoil.

He will be the United Kingdom’s first prime minister of Indian origin. His family migrated to Britain in the 1960s, a period when many people from Britain’s former colonies moved to the country to help it rebuild after the Second World War.

After graduating from Oxford University, he went to Stanford University, where he met his wife, Akshata Murthy. Her father is Indian billionaire N. R. Narayana Murthy, founder of outsourcing giant Infosys.
