Commerce Department To Induct 140 Private Sector Professionals

The lateral recruitment would enable the plan to help India reach 2 trillion dollars exports by 2030. A trade intelligence and analytics wing has been formed.

The department of commerce may induct 140 professionals from the private sector under the proposed trade promotion body. Such induction would facilitate key roles in bilateral and multilateral trade negotiations, export promotion and data intelligence.

Expertise and talent of private sector is a crucial element which would enable the plan to help India reach 2 trillion dollars exports by 2030 through this lateral recruitment.

According to officials, an expansion in the number of officers engaged in trade negotiations would be seen.

“The process to find talent outside government in the commerce department is on run and the results would start coming out by October 15,” said an official connected with the development.

“As of now approval for 140 people have been made including lawyers, economists and MBAs,” the official added.

As a part of rebuilding, the department of commerce has initiated the creation of multi-skilled teams and enhanced participation of private sector talent. Within the department, trade negotiations have been covered into two separate bilateral and multilateral buckets.

Academic institutions such as ICRIER, IIFT and NCAER have been asked to render long term expertise.  Also, a trade intelligence and analytics wing has been formed.

“Idea behind this is to hold Indian Trade Service as the in-house long-term expertise with institutional memory that would reside in the department. It can inspire new talent through government recruitment and the private sector,” said the official.
