The Union Labour Ministry has summoned the e-commerce company Amazon India to appear before the deputy chief labour commissioner in Bengaluru on 23 November. This is in connection with the alleged forced terminations by the company.

The notice issued by the ministry on 22 November said, “You (Amazon) are therefore requested to attend this office with all relevant records in the matter either personally or through an authorised representative on the aforesaid date and time without fail.”

The development came after a complaint was filed by the employee of union Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES). It alleged Amazon of violating labour laws.

In a letter to Union Labor Minister Bhupender Yadav, NITES claimed that Amazon staffers were removed forcefully from the company.

The union pressing for an inquiry maintained a Voluntary Separation Programme has been issued to employees by giving them deadline of 30 November to complete the process.

Also, NITES claimed the livelihood of many are at stake as a result of the same. It argued that despite any permission from the government, an employer cannot be laid off from the service, underlying the Industries Disputes Act.

The president of NITES, Harpreet Saluja informed the media that the union is looking forward for justice for the employees.

Also, he added that government would scrap the unethical Voluntary Separation Policy raised by the Amazon. The action taken by the authorities has provided a sigh of relief for the employees.

The Amazon is all ready to lay off nearly 10,000 people as of now and the terminations will continue till 2023, reported a media house.
