The World Bank has appointed Indian national Indermit Gill as the chief economist and senior vice-president for development economics at the World Bank. Gill will be the second Indian to serve as chief economist at the World Bank, Kaushik Basu being the first who served between 2012-2016. Gita Gopinath and Raghuram Rajan have served as chief economists at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the parallel organisation of the World Bank.

Between 2016 and 2021, he was a professor of public policy at Duke University and non-resident senior fellow in the Global Economy and Development program at the Brookings Institution. Gill has also taught at Georgetown University and the University of Chicago. A student of Nobel Laureates Gary Becker and Robert E. Lucas Jr., Gill holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago, world bank issued in a statement.
