Govt Data Shows Surge In Sowing Of Rabi Season Crop

With the ongoing rabi (winter) season, wheat at around 54,000 hectare has been sown so far for the 2022-23 crop year. As compared to previous year, it has gone up by 59 per cent higher than from 34,000 hectare, as per the agriculture ministry data released on 28 October

In October the sowing of wheat being the main rabi crop begins which is then harvested in March-April. Apart from this, gram and mustard falls in other major crops which are grown in the rabi season (July-June).

In the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir, wheat sowing is underway, said latest sowing data.

As per data release, nearly 39,000 hectare in Uttar Pradesh, 9,000 hectare in Uttarakhand, 2,000 hectare in Rajasthan and 1,000 hectare in Jammu & Kashmir was covered under wheat as on 28 October.

On the other hand, pulses sown in the area was higher at 8.82 lakh hectare for this rabi season as compared to 5.91 lakh hectare from last year. The gram was planted in 6.96 lakh hectare in comparison to 5.91 lakh hectare a year ago, among pulses.

Also, the oilseeds of  six types was sown in around 19.69 lakh hectare keeping it  higher than 15.13 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Majorly the areas covered rapeseed and mustard at 18.99 lakh hectare against to 14.21 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.

The coarse cereals were sown in 4.68 lakh hectare compared to 2.31 lakh hectare, whereas rice in 4.02 lakh hectare against 3.54 lakh hectare a year ago, the data revealed.

All the rabi crops in total covered around 37.75 lakh hectare as of 28 October this season which was higher than 27.24 lakh hectare from last year.

The process of sowing is expected to pace up in the coming weeks once the land gets clear after harvesting the Kharif crops.
